October 21st through 26th marks the Week Without Violence, so I conducted an interview with Emergency Family Shelter Director, Stephanie Chapman, to hear more about what our Shelter program does to combat gender-based violence. Read her responses below:
“The shelter accepts placements of families who are fleeing domestic violence situations in cases where they would be safe at our publicly known address. In the cases where it would not provide safety we will refer them to shelters who specifically cater to DV. We are a safe place for our residents and we do not allow physical or verbal abuse in any manner. We do not permit parents to spank children or use any form of physical consequences. We also teach techniques that can de-escalate the adult and child to ensure safety.”
2. How do you support participants who are experiencing gender-based violence?
“We connect families who reach out to our shelter with resources to help them find safety. We educate families about what DV/gender based violence may look like and help them get out of the situation safely. Staff is sensitive to what families may have experienced and ensures intentional interactions meant to make families feel safe and at ease.”
“We educate families on how gender-based violence may not always look like a husband hitting his wife, and that financial abuse meant to control or trap someone is still abuse. We have provided families with financial literacy workshops and series taught by financial institutions and community organizations. A large part of case management includes teaching budgeting and smart financial planning so families can successfully obtain and maintain permanent housing and meet other goals. We connect adults to job training, career readiness programs, and employment resources to assist adults who may not have had their own income be able to provide for themselves and their children.”
“Family Services of the Piedmont provides services, resources, and shelter to families experiencing domestic violence. Their website features a quick exit option, allowing people to safely search the site and being able to close the tab immediately if someone tries to see what they’re doing. They also provide financial stability counseling services.”
